Every map.
Your own history.
Build a railway. Find an opportunity. Watch a town come to life. Make your way in a living economy, then take a moment to enjoy the world you’ve helped shape.
October, 1874
Six minutes past sunset, and you are nearly out of money.
The valley below Harlan Pass has gone blue with dusk. The cut through the ridge took four months, two renegotiated loans, and the last of your credit.
Then — up in the rocks — a whistle. A headlight swings around the shoulder of the mountain, and eleven ore hoppers come down through the switchbacks with their brakes singing, a lantern swaying on the caboose. Down in town, the depot windows go amber one by one.
That is one possible history.
Many ways to make it yours
There is more than one road to a fortune. Follow the one that suits you, or all of them at once.
Build the network
Read the land before you lay a rail. Passes are prizes, rivers take their toll, and valleys carry you through. Link the mine to the mill and the mill to the town, and the goods begin to move.
Make the deal
Your own fortune and your company’s treasury are separate ledgers. Buy stock in any railroad on the map, your rivals’ included. Sometimes the best move is on the market, not on the map.
Own the industry
Nothing on the map is worth much alone. Coal wants a mill, and the mill wants a town. Own the works at both ends of your line, and let the town grow on what you deliver.
Take a moment to watch
Not every minute needs a decision. Let a train cross the valley at dusk, and see the results of choices you made years before. The world keeps its own pace, and it is worth your time.
A world that remembers
The world carries traces of its history. Decisions you made years ago stay on the map, where you can see them.
A town you connected
When your line arrived, it was a depot and two houses. Years later, its windows light up along the track, and you know why it grew.
The old 4-4-0 you kept
A streamliner overtakes your first, wheezing 4-4-0 on the parallel track. You keep the old girl running anyway. Sentiment is the one line item the board can’t veto.
A vote in the boardroom
One vote, and a company changes hands. You lose yours, or you take someone else’s, and not a mile of track moves.
